Quote Of The Day

This comes from Alexis de Tocqueville:

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.”

FYI: A few months ago, I discovered that Alexis De Tocqueville’s 2 volume “Democracy in America” is a public domain document available online at the following huge archive:

    Volume 1: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/815

    Volume 2: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/816

I was amazed how many historic writings are available for free at this resource. You should bookmark it.
